History MagazineBruges was the place to be in the 138o’s.  Read all about it in this month’s BBC History Magazine.  I had a terrific time there researching my second Hildegard of Meaux novel.  That was the one where the Prioress sends Hildegard over the Alps to retrieve  a legendary relic during the battle for the crown between Richard II and his cousin Bolingbroke (later Henry IV).   Today Bruges is still a beautiful city, often called the Venice of the North with good reason.  I recommend it for a short break by Eurostar.  Enjoy ale and mussels.  Climb the tower.  Visit the galleries. Hildegard was too early to see the van Eycks but you can make up for that.  She might have visited the Beguinage though.  I wouldn’t mind staying there myself.  Bon voyage.
